The advice that the panelists gave us at the end of the session was very meaningful to me, so I thought I'd repeat it on here :)
1. Cultivate love
2. Have a tough conversation
3. Contribute beyond what the structure tells you
4. Show up
5. Make memories
6. Don't give up
7. Be excited
8. Know your values and be your values
9. Lose yourself in the service of others
Some great words to live by! I definitely took their advice to heart and plan on using it in my own life.
Something that Sharelle said that stood out to me was that we need to hold our members accountable for their actions. She basically told us to start calling people out when they are doing something wrong. So many problems get brought to her attention because no one stopped them along the way. In our chapter meeting tonight, one of our alum said that "it is hard to watch wrong things happen from the sidelines, but it is even harder to stand up and do something about it."
The guy from Farmhouse (I'm sorry I forget his name) spoke about how OSU has so much potential to increase it's Greek Life. A lot of the conversation was focused on the negative aspects of sorority/fraternity life, and I was glad to hear that he believes in the potential of OSU Greek Life. He also mentioned quality over quantity, which is very important and sometimes overlooked. Many people seem to be focused on increasing our numbers, but we cannot do this at the expensive of quality people.
Overall, I took a lot away from this panel and really enjoyed hearing from different members of the Greek Community.
CAN'T WAIT FOR MIRROR LAKE JUMP TOMORROW!!

"Have a tough conversation"-this one definitely stuck with me too and I think it's the one that most of us sort of shirk off. I feel like some of the crap that goes down in houses can be prevented if someone just intervenes and sits down and has that conversation, brother to brother, sister to sister. It's something I need to work on too. If something is bothering me about my chapter, or a certain brother, then why shouldn't I say something!?!?
ReplyDeleteMirror Lake is gonna be epic.
awesome blog.
ReplyDeletecultivating love was one of my favorite parts of the panel.
and i agree with you about the increasing numbers aspect of greek life. I also worry that our drive is so strong to grow, that we may lose quality just to achieve quantity.
This is such a good post! I think you hit pretty much all the important points they talked about. And I really like how you mentioned the potential we have because I definitely think we have the capability of become a larger and even better community.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the quote,"it is hard to watch wrong things happen from the sidelines, but it is even harder to stand up and do something about it." I can honestly say that too many times I have stood on the sidelines and not stood up to people.
ReplyDeletei love what you took out of the panel... their final words of advice was probably also my favorite part of the discussion. everything they said all really made sense to me and made me realize how many people truly care about greek life, and i can tell you probably feel the same way
ReplyDeleteI too really enjoyed the panel, especially point number 9- finding yourself by losing yourself in the service of others. It took me a few seconds too get it, but it is SO true. We are here to serve others! Great post Chels!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the part about our greek community emphasizing quality over quantity. Maybe we just need to continue what we're doing and not be so concerned with expanding. The best people I've met at this school are involved in greek life and this makes me proud to be greek!! LOVE YOU chels!! :)
ReplyDeletechel im so glad we took the same thing away about having the hard converstations... sometimes it seems like the worst idea, but it was def nice to know that in the end it will make a difference and if so many of us in our class took that away from it i think it will make the community so much better
ReplyDeletei think the having the tough conversations is the best thing i got out of the panel! sometimes its so hard, but it is what will make our chapters better for everyone!
