Okay...so to go a little more in depth on incongruency in Pi Phi and in the OSU Greek Community.
In Pi Phi specifically, we have at least 2 tg's and a date party/formal every quarter. On top of that we have plenty of pre-games with frats, usually every other weekend. However, we usually only have one or two main philanthropy events a quarter. Fall quarter, Pi Phi really only does one philanthropy event, Dodge the Arrow. We put a lot of time and effort into that event, but unfortunately that is really our only one.
We pride ourselves on NOT HAZING! I couldn't be happier to say that I was not hazed when I joined Pi Phi. However, we tell our new members that they are not allowed to pre game before any tg or date party until they are initiated...and that sets them apart from everyone else and singles them out. We have reasons for doing that, but ultimately the new members are asked to do something that all of the actives do not have to do (refrain from drinking before any social events).
On the weekends, Pi Phi's can most often be found at the O Patio, and on Thursday nights, some Pi Phi's can almost always be found at bars downtown. I wish I could say that about another day of the week, such as on Fridays Pi Phi's can always be found at The Boys and Girls Club, but unfortunately I cannot confidently say that.
All things considered, Pi Phi does a good job of being congruent with our values. But we could be doing a GREAT job with just a little more consideration of some things.
Chelsea, the fact that you have come to realize that your chapter only puts on one big philanthropy event every year (and you do not seem quite happy with that) then I think YOU should do something about it. As I have realized with my chapter, older members tend to pass traditional programming events down to the newer members. Therefore, we get stuck in a cycle of repetition with the same old stuff. Although it's perfectly fine for your chapter to do your yearly philanthropy event it is up to each member to do something different once in a while by stepping out of your comfort zone and getting creative. As a new member I am learning to keep my chapter's tradition alive while still making my mark in my years and changing certain aspects of my chapter. I hope you do the same as well.
ReplyDeleteChelsea, I don't think you should be that hard on the fact that you only put on one or two main philanthropy events per quarter. Putting on a philanthropy event is something that obviously takes a lot of time and effort to plan. As long as your chapter is putting their best effort into that event and preparing for it(which it sounds like they are) then I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. For example, my chapter does a Rivalry Run with the Michigan FIJIs and that only occurs once a year, the week of the OSU vs. Michigan game, but we spend all year raising funds for this one event and raising awareness for our philanthropy.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love that you are so proud of not hazing. Our chapter is huge on anti-hazing and it's nice to know that many others in the Greek community feel the same way.
I think you're very right Chelsea. I think that what you have talked about translates to a lot of the greek community. There are a lot of organizations that spend a lot of time on social events and not on service or philanthropy events. I think a work hard play hard philosophy should be used in this situation. That means working hard to raise money for charity and raise awareness for different problems in society, but also at the same time remembering to enjoy yourselves and have plenty of fun! After all, we're only in college for so long. So my main point, is to implement a work hard, play hard philosphy into your sisters feelings. I think that's the only way to fix this in our community.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the honesty in this blog and the no hazing part!
ReplyDeletei definitely agree with everyone else... we are also very against hazing and i think that is something to be really proud of in greek life, especially at such a big university
ReplyDeleteSo right Chelsea. People have to realize that being Greek is more than just partying.
ReplyDeleteChelsea I love that you're so proud of your organizational values, but like Eli said I think you're being too hard on yourself. Keep in mind that were in greek life to enhance our college experience in every way. Naturally people want to go have fun at the bars and tailgates, but perhaps you could be the driving force in talking people into volunteering a little more each month or taking more time for comm service. We often times take for granted how great all of our situations here are at OSU so it's nice for us all to give back
ReplyDeleteI love that you just talked about how Pi Phi doesn't haze!!! I think that this is something that turns off PNM's to greek life as a whole. THANK YOU:) love you sister.
ReplyDeleteI'm right with Kelsey on this one- I don't think I could be a member of a sorority, which condones hazing! Nice blog sistahhhh!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kelsey as well hazing does scare away good qualified interest and it's nice to see that people do not haze.
